Faraz Shauketaly, a Sri Lankan journalist, was shot in the neck by a group of unidentified men at his home near Colombo.

Shauketaly, 54, a reporter with the Sunday Leader who holds dual British and Sri Lankan citizenship, was rushed to the hospital, according to BBC News. A doctor at the hospital where he was treated said he is now in stable condition after surgery to remove a bullet from his neck.

Agence France-Presse reported that at least three men stormed into Shauketaly's house in Mount Lavinia around midnight and opened fire.

"We are told his condition is stable but he is still in intensive care," Shauketaly's editor, Shakuntala Perera, told AFP. "We believe the attack was due to his journalistic work."

Perera said Shauketaly knew he was being targeted and had feared for his safety after he recently wrote a series of articles on alleged corruption in the energy sector.

According to Deutsche Welle, the Sunday Leader's former editor, who was known for criticizing Sri Lanka's government, was shot dead near his office in January 2009.

Amnesty International also noted that at least 14 Sri Lankan media workers have been killed since 2006. None of the murders have been solved.
