BERKELEY — UC Berkeley police shot a man who brought a gun into a computer lab in the Walter A. Haas School of Business on Tuesday afternoon, reported the San Jose Mercury News.
According to the Chicago Tribune, police said there is no indication that the shooting was linked to Tuesday's protests against police brutality and budget cuts on Berkeley's campus.
University officials said said a staff member noticed a man carrying what looked like a gun in the business school elevator around 2 p.m. local time, reported the Washington Post. The same staff member called the police at 2:17 and they arrived two minutes later.
According to Berkeleyside, the man entered a computer lab in the business school and raised his gun, but police shot him before he could fire. Four students were in the lab at the time, but no one was injured.
The Daily Californian, UC Berkeley's student-run newspaper, reported that the suspect was taken to Highland Hospital in neighboring Oakland, and was conscious when he was transported. The police were calling the shooting an "isolated incident."
The last shooting at Cal was in the 1980s.

The shooting did not stop more than 2,000 students from gathering in Sproul Plaza as part of a general strike and rally to decrease tuition and allow for the Occupy Cal encampment to be re-established after last week's shut down, according to the Associated Press. The student protesters were joined by members of Occupy Oakland who marched the five-mile distance to join in the day's events.
