Olympics: USA takes gold in women’s soccer

The US women's soccer team won 2-1 over Japan today, scoring its fourth Olympic gold medal in five games thanks to US midfielder Carli Lloyd, reported USA Today.
The Americans dominated today, staying 2-0 over Japan through much of the game, with Japan only scoring in the 63rd minute, said USA Today.

Lloyd scored both goals during the match at London's Wembley Stadium, said ABC News, noting a key save by US goalkeeper Hope Solo that helped keep Japan at bay until the referee's final call.
The US was "looking to avenge their defeat to Japan in the final of the 2011 World Cup," according to the Huffington Post. The tense 2011 match went to penalty kicks and finally taken by Japan, 3-1.
But when it comes to the Olympic games, the US women's soccer team has a legacy to maintain: with one exception (Sydney, 2000), the team has won gold in every Games since the sport joined the competition in 1996, according to ABC.
