No group has taken responsibility for the attack, but local officials told Reuters they suspect it was the work of a criminal gang.

The village of Dogon Dawa is located in the northern Kaduna state, an area battling an Islamic insurgency and part of the "Middle Belt" diving the country's mostly Muslim north and its predominantly Christian south, according to Reuters.
