Newfoundland murder-suicide leaves 2 dead at medical clinic

Two people are dead after a shooting at a Cape St. George District, Newfoundland, medical clinic, reported The Telegram. Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said they responded to the shooting at the medical clinic in Degrau on the Port au Port Peninsula just before 1 p.m. today.

The shooting is being deemed a murder-suicide, according to the Canadian Press. The Mounties said a 49-year-old woman was dead on the scene and a 54-year-old man was brought to the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville, Newfoundland, where he later died. RCMP Sgt. Marc Coulombe said they are not looking for a suspect, but he wasn't able to release any details of the circumstances surrounding the shooting. 

But the Canadian Press also reported Degrau mayor Peter Fenwick and a neighbor and relative who did not want to be identified said the victims are Stephanie Chaisson and her estranged husband Luke Chaisson. They also said the couple had two grown children, a son and daughter.

"We're a community of about 950 people and virtually everybody knows most of the people involved," said Fenwick. "It's a terrible shock to a small community like this."

Leigh Costard, a cousin of Luke Chaisson, reaffirmed that the community is in shock.

"I guess nobody really knows what to think or say," Costard said outside the clinic in Cape St. George, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. "It’s going to take a long time for everyone to come to terms with what happened. The lady was a beautiful, wonderful woman and she will be missed."
