A man and a woman in New Mexico have been charged after they locked an eight-year-old disabled girl in a cage inside their mobile home and then left her alone while the rest of the family went to the movies, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.
Sky News reported Cindy Patriarchias, 33, has been charged with “negligently causing child abuse,” while her live-in boyfriend, Edmond Gonzales, 37, has been charged with “negligently permitting child abuse.”
Patriarchias and Gonzales had taken the woman’s three children to watch a movie at an elementary school on Friday and left the girl, who has developmental disabilities, in a wooden cage in the corner of a bedroom, the Las-Cruces Sun News reported.
Patriarchias’ estranged husbanded raised the alarm when he arrived at the school and learned that the eight-year-old girl was at home.
The Associated Press said Patriarchias had been trying to adopt the girl, who is now under the care New Mexico’s child-protection agency.
