NEW YORK — Two children, ages 2 and 6, were killed in their luxury Manhattan apartment Thursday, allegedly by their nanny.
ABC News reported that the children's mother, Marina Krim, made the shocking discovery when she returned home with her other child, Nessie, age 3, at 5.30 p.m. after their nanny failed to turn up to swimming lessons.
Krim found her two children, Lucia, 6, and her brother, Leo, 2, with multiple stab wounds in the bathtub. The children were rushed to hospital but could not be saved.
The nanny, Yoselyn Ortega, 50, was lying on the bathroom floor with her throat slashed, the New York Post reported.
"Something happened to my kids!” screamed Krim, who wrapped the nanny’s neck with a towel.
The doorman, Glen Loody, called 911. “She was crying. She was screaming,” he said.
Ortega is in critical but stable condition, and is yet to be charged.
The children’s paternal grandmother, Karen Krim, told the New York Post her daughter had been a stay-at-home mom until about a year ago when they employed Ortega.
The couple had been careful in hiring a nanny, and spent nine days with Ortega's family in the Dominican Republic beforehand.
“Kevin told me that she was a nice girl,” the grandmother, who described the children as "angels", told The Post.
“How could she do something like that?
The New York Daily News spoke to neighbors who described Ortega as a kind-hearted woman who loved taking care of kids.
“She just seems like a calm, normal person,” said Kenia Gelao, 25.
“She’s always very good with my kids. She’s never had no problems.”
The Krims spent time with Ortega’s family during a February vacation to the Dominican Republic, and Maria wrote about it on her online journal.
“We spent the past 9 days in the Dominican Republic.
“We spent half the time at our nanny, Josie’s sisters home in Santiago . . . We met Josie’s amazing familia!!! And the Dominican Republic is a wonderful country!! More pics to come!!”
The New York Times interviewed a neighbor, Rima Starr, who said the mother, a doctor, was in a state of shock and she could hear her wailing.
“She was screaming in a psychotic state,” she said.
“Just screaming and swaying. Then she had a lucid moment and said, ‘I need a doctor.’”
The New York Daily News reported Marina Krim was a devoted mother who posted hundreds of photos chronicling her children's lives in an online blog.
Her last entry was posted three hours before the tragedy, in which she wrote: “Leo speaks in the most adorable way possible.. And he does things like, 'I want a fresh bagel'
"One of the best parts of my day is after I drop both girls off at school and have three precious hours with little Lito all to myself."
