Michelle Obama to attend Hadiya Pendleton funeral in Chicago (VIDEO)

First lady Michelle Obama will attend the funeral of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old girl who was shot and killed in Chicago after performing at the inauguration.

Pendleton was shot dead Jan. 29 in a park close to the Obamas' home on the South Side.

Less than two weeks earlier, she performed with her school's marching band as a majorette at several inauguration events in Washington, DC.

A White House official confirmed Obama's attendance to the Chicago Tribune.

Senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, both Chicago natives, will also attend the funeral Saturday afternoon.

President Barack Obama called the family last week to offer his condolences, WMAQ reported.

According to police, Pendleton was hanging out with members of her volleyball team at Harsh Park when a man jumped a fence, ran toward them and started shooting.

Pendleton was shot in the back, dying at a hospital less than an hour later, and a boy was shot in the leg.

The shooter jumped into a car and fled the scene.

No one has been caught, despite a $40,000 reward for information leading to an arrest, the Chicago Tribune reported
