Mexico road accident kills 16 people going to a birthday party

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Sixteen people, including two baby girls, were killed when a truck collided with a van carrying people to a girl’s traditional 15th birthday celebration in northern Mexico, Mexican newspaper El Universal reported today.

The accident happened Saturday night on a stretch of highway between the community of Viesca and Matamoros in Coahuila state, the Associated Press reported.

Three children, 10 women and three men from three families were killed.

The Australian Associated Press, citing a statement from the Coahuila Attorney-General’s office, reported that the truck allegedly crossed onto the wrong side of the road and hit the van head-on.

The driver then fled the scene of the accident, the AP reported.
