Libya: Lockerbie files to be released

The new Libyan government will open all the files related to the Lockerbie bombing, the Libyan ambassador to the UK confirmed today, the 24th anniversary of the bombing of Pam Am flight 103 over Scotland.

However, Mahmud Nacua, cautioned that it would be at least another year before Libya was in a position to release the information it held.

The bomber, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi died earlier this year after being released by the Scottish government on compassionate grounds. He was suffering from terminal prostate cancer.

While Meghrahi is the only person to ever be convicted of the bombing, the Scottish police hope to pursue other suspects. They hoped this would become possible after a revolution overthrew Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

No formal agreement over the files has been reached, BBC News reported. Nacua believes that the files would only be released after his government had established security and stability.
