A SCAT airlines plane crashed while attempting to land in heavy fog outside Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, today, the Associated Press reported.
All 21 people on board – five crew members and 16 passengers, including one child – died, the New York Times reported.
The Bombardier Challenger CRJ200 jet had flown 775 miles from the provincial city of Kokshetau to Almaty, according to the New York Times.
“There was no fire,” Yuri Ilyin, the deputy head of the emergency department for Almaty, said, according to Kazakh state media, the New York Times reported. “The plane was only destroyed on impact when it hit the ground.”
This is the second major plane crash in Kazakhstan in the past month, the AP reported. In December, there were no survivors when an An-72 military plane crashed near the southern city of Shymkent.
