John Galliano controversy: Was his outfit ‘anti-Semitic’ or just flamboyant?

NEW YORK — Fashion designer John Galliano is making headlines again, despite keeping a low profile during his return to New York's Fashion Week.

The New York Post has accused him of mocking the Jewish community by dressing like ultra-orthodox Hasidic Jew at Oscar de la Renta’s Fashion Week show in New York.

He was spotted wearing the outfit, a "long jacket, hat and curly 'peyos,' or sidelocks on his way to the party, the Post reported.

Galliano was fired two years ago from Christian Dior after an anti-Semitic rant at a Paris cafe where he was caught on videotape saying "I love Hitler."

As GlobalPost reported, the fashion designer testified in Paris court in 2011 that he didn't remember making the alleged anti-Semitic slurs due to his alcoholism and pill intake. Galliano has since apologized for the anti-Semitic rant.

Agence France Presse reported the Anti-Defamation League is not taking Galliano to task for his outfit.

There is no truth to the allegation that John Galliano was dressed in Hasidic garb,” ADL National Director Abraham Foxman told the New York Daily News.
