James Holmes charged with murder in Colorado movie theater shooting

James Eagan Holmes was formally charged with murder Monday in the Colorado movie theater shootings.

He faces 24 counts of murder and 116 counts of attempted murder, CBS News reported.

It was Holmes' second court appearance since the July 20 massacre in Aurora during a midnight showing of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises," which killed 12 people and injured 58 others, the Associated Press reported.

Court documents showed that for each victim who died, Holmes faces one count of first-degree murder for intending to cause harm and another for acting with extreme indifference to human life.

Prosecutors also included attempted murder charges against Holmes for allegedly booby trapping his apartment with the intent to kill any officers who responded to the movie theater attack, the AP wrote.

Unlike Holmes' first court appearance on July 23, Monday's hearing was not televised, CBS reported.

The 24-year-old suspect was not expected to enter pleas.

The Associated Press said security was tight at Monday's hearing at the Arapahoe County Courthouse in Centennial, Colorado. Armed law enforcement officers were stationed at the entrance and on the roof of the Colorado courthouse. Additional vehicles blocked the entrance to the building.
