Golden Gate Bridge celebrates 75th birthday

The Golden Gate Bridge is getting ready to celebrate its 75th birthday.

Starting Sunday, remotely operated mirrors on top of the bridge’s iconic towers will flash narrow beams of reflected sunlight all around the San Francisco Bay, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“We love our view of the bridge. We’ve always wanted to enhance it with a little sparkle,” astrophysicist John Vallerga at UC Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory told the L.A. Times. "It’s art in progress. It’s never been done before and we don’t know what it’s going to look like.”

The project is part of the bridge’s yearlong birthday celebration, according to the Golden Gate Festival website, which says tens of thousands of people are expected to show up along the waterfront to mark the annivesary Sunday.

The Associated Press reported the festivities culminate with a fireworks display at night and heavy traffic is expected.
