Giffords shooter Loughner sentenced to life in prison without parole (VIDEO)

Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband confronted the man who tried to assassinate her nearly two years ago, telling Jared Loughner "You failed" during his sentencing hearing Thursday.

"You may have put a bullet in her head, but you haven't put a dent in her spirit," Mark Kelly was quoted by Tucson TV station KVOA as saying.

Loughner, 23, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the January 2011 shooting at a Giffords political event in the parking lot of a grocery store in Tucson, Arizona, the Arizona Republic reported.

Six people were killed and 13 others, including Giffords, were wounded.

Many of those shot by Loughner spoke in court Thursday, including one woman who survived three bullets.

Susan Hileman scolded Loughner, staring him down and visibly shaking as she told Loughner's parents that they and the community had failed him, The Associated Press reported.

Kelly helped a slightly limping Giffords up to the front of the courtroom and told Loughner, "Gabby and I are done thinking about you," according to Reuters.

Neither Loughner nor his parents spoke.

A judge in August ruled that Loughner was mentally fit to plead guilty to 19 charges in the case and avoid a lengthy trial.
