Family Research Council shooting (VIDEO)

A gunman opened fire in the lobby of the conservative Family Research Council (FRC) in Washington, DC, wounding a security guard, authorities say. 

About 10:45 am a man entered the building and expressed disapproval of the FRC's advocacy work. After being confronted by a security guard he opened fire, according to the Washington Post.

"The security guard here is a hero, as far as I’m concerned,” D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said. ”He did his job. The person never made it past the front.”

Tony Perkins, president of FRC, said in a statement, “The police are investigating this incident. Our first concern is with our colleague who was shot today. Our concern is for him and his family.”

The FRC is a conservative Christian lobbying group that claims to advocate “faith, family and freedom in public policy and public opinion,” according to its website.  

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a nonprofit civil rights organization, labled the FRC as a hate group in 2010 and says the FRC defames gays and lesbians. 

The SPLC provides anti-gay statements made in the past by FRC members:
