Ann Romney has hit back at Republican critics of her husband, saying in a radio interview: "Stop it. This is hard. You want to try it? Get in the ring."

Her outburst on Radio Iowa follows criticisms by some prominent GOP members over Mitt Romney's latest campaign mishaps and tactics, including the leaking of secret tapes at a fundraising dinner.

CNN reported that Peggy Noonan, whose conservative columns appear in The Wall Street Journal, wrote that Romney's campaign was "incompetent" and "a rolling calamity".

Ann Romney said in the interview that Republicans are “lucky” that her husband is in the race.

"This is hard and, you know, it's an important thing that we're doing right now and it's an important election and it is time for all Americans to realize how significant this election is and how lucky we are to have someone with Mitt's qualifications and experience and know-how to be able to have the opportunity to run this country," the would-be First Lady said.

Asked about the criticism, she said: "I don't let it sink in. You hear it and then you just let it go right by."
