Anders Breivik ruled sane, gets Norway’s max sentence

Norway judges today found confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik sane in a unanimous decision that sentenced him to 21 years in jail with the possibility of extension, reported BBC News. 

Breivik has confessed to a car bomb attack that killed eight people in Oslo and a shooting rampage that killed 69 people taking part in a summer camp on Utoya island last summer.

The 33-year-old right wing extremist has justified the violence as part of his anti-Muslim crusade. Furthermore, he apologized in the court Friday for not killing more people.

"I wish to apologize to all militant nationalists that I wasn't able to execute more," he said, according to the Associated Press.

Speaking at a district court in Oslo today, Judge Wenche Elizabeth Arntzen announced the decision, saying all five judges agreed that the accused should serve at least  "21 years of preventive detention," reported Australia's ABC News. 

Prosecutors had pushed for Breivik to be found insane and jailed to indefinite psychiatric care, according to ABC News. Breivik earlier called such a sentence "worse than death," said BBC. 

The psychiatrists called by the court were divided as to Breivik's condition, according to BBC, the first panel having ruled him a paranoid schizophrenic and the second finding him sane. 

Norway does not have the death penalty.
