Texas District Attorney and wife were “targeted” in killings

The murders of Texas District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife Cynthia were not random and the victims were "targeted", Forney Texas Mayor Darren Rozell told CBS.

The bodies of the McLellands were found on Saturday at their home about 35 miles south east of Dallas, according to Kaufman County sheriff's Lt. Justin Lewis.

"We're in the very preliminary stages in the investigation,"  Lewis said. "Right now, it's a death investigation."

Neighbors told police they believe McLelland, 63, and his wife, Cynthia, 65, a psychiatric nurse, were killed on Friday night when gunshots were mistaken for thunder during a storm.

The killings come just two months after the murder of Mark Hasse, 57, a prosecutor who worked for McLelland. Police have not said if the three murders are linked but members of the community suspect the killings are related.

"Everybody's a little on edge and a little shocked. It appears this was not a random act," Mayor Rozell told The Associated Press.

"We've lived here for years and we've never had anything like this happen before and for it to happen so close to home is very very scary," neighbor Vanessa Hernandez told ABC News.

Texas police and the FBI are still searching for a suspect in Hasse's murder. He was shot on the morning of January 31 in a parking lot behind the county courthouse where he worked.
