Snowboarder trapped in ice tunnel on Oregon’s Mt Hood

A 25-year-old snowboarder was trapped in a collapsed ice tunnel on Oregon's icy Mt Hood on Saturday, prompting a rescue and recovery effort that has stretched on into Sunday. 

The snowboarder had been walking through the White River Glacier area with friends when the icy tunnel suddenly collapsed on him Saturday afternoon, wrote the Associated Press, trapping him under a huge piece of hardened ice.

His friends immediately called police, and rescuers swiftly responded to the scene, attempting to dig the young man out for an hour with little success. 

The missing man has been identified as Collin Backowski of Pines, Colorado, added the Associated Press. 

Located at an elevation of 8,100 feet, rescuers were using hand-tools in their digging efforts on Saturday, wrote Oregon Live News, but plan to return with "whatever we can get" on Sunday. 

"This is clearly not a good-looking situation when it comes to survivability,"  said Sgt. Pete Hughes, a spokesman for the Hood River County Sheriff's Office, to Oregon Live of the situation. 

Mt Hood is an iconic-looking 11,249 foot tall stratovolcano and is the highest point in the state of Oregon, regularly attracting snowboarders and hikers. 

As Mt Hood is at such a high elevation and is dotted with glaciers, summer snowboarding is a popular — and occasionally dangerous — activity for thrill-seekers who pay a visit to the area.
