Thirteen people, including a two-year-old child, were killed when a gunman went from house to house in a Serbian village, shooting people as they slept.

According to authorities the suspect, armed with a handgun, burst into five houses in Velika Ivanca, a village 30 miles southeast of Belgrade, at about 5 a.m. Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.

Six women, six men and a two-year-old child were fatally shot, before the gunman tried to kill himself and his wife.

Police identified the suspect as Ljubisa Bogdanovic, who was described by neighbors as a "nice, quiet man."

Sky News reported the gunman and his wife, whom he also shot, are in critical condition at a hospital.

Residents of the village alleged that Bogdanovic, a former soldier, first killed his son before leaving the house and shooting his neighbors, some of whom were still asleep.

"He knocked on the doors and as they were opened he just fired a shot," resident Radovan Radosavljevic told the AP. "He was a good neighbor and anyone would open their doors to him. I don't know what happened."

Police chief Milorad Veljovic said the motive for the attack was not known, CNN reported.
