San Antonio shooting: Gunman arrested following attack on Fort Sam Houston

A suspect has been arrested following a Monday shooting at the Fort Sam Houston military base in Texas, reported San Antonio's News4.

A spokesperson for Joint Base San Antonio told News4 that one woman had been shot but survived the attack, which reportedly occurred just before 3 p.m. local time.

Reuters said the woman is an active duty army member in her mid-thirties. She is reportedly in stable condition at the San Antonio Military Medical Center.

The base had been put on lockdown following the incident, according to the Associated Press. News4 said that has since been lifted. 

A San Antonio police officer told AP that they had arrested the gunman and handed him over to military authorities. 

The motive for the attack was not immediately clear. San Antonio Police Chief William McManus told Reuters this "was not a random shooting," saying authorities believe the gunman got into an argument with the woman in question. McManus suggested the two might have been romantically involved.

A Fort Sam official told the Houston Chronicle the gunman was a retired army sergeant major and that he had turned himself in, but this could not be independently confirmed. The source told the Chronicle he had “no idea” about a possible motive for the attack. 

Many wounded soldiers are treated at the Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston military base, said the Chronicle, describing it as a large establishment with some 32,000 military and civilian workers.
