Powerball winning ticket for $338 million sold in New Jersey

An as-yet-unidentified New Jersey resident walked away with a cool $338 million in Powerball lottery winnings, the sixth-largest such jackpot in history.

According to CNN, the lottery is held in 42 states, and a ticket matching the winning 17, 29, 31, 52, 53 and 31 numbers was recently sold in New Jersey.

The drawing was the 13th held since a man from Virginia scored $217 million Feb 6 of this year, while runner-up tickets to the latest winner were sold in New Jersey and in ten other states.

Powerball winners can elect for a lump sum payment, or for annuity payments spread out over the course of 29 years — perhaps a more financially prudent option.

The largest Powerball jackpot in history took place in November 2012, when two winning tickets from Missouri and Arizona were split for a $587.5 million prize.
