Turning 77 on Tuesday, the pontiff shared his birthday breakfast with four homeless men often seen near the Vatican after they attended the morning Mass.

One of them even brought his dog.

Pope Francis mentioned each one of the men by name during his homily before eating breakfast with them at the hotel where he lives in Vatican City.

The pope had already blown out the candles on his birthday cake, given to him by children being treated at the Vatican's Pediatric Dispensary of Santa Marta, a clinic that serves some of the poorest families in Rome.

The children sang "Happy Birthday” to the pontiff after giving him a white and yellow cake, which are the Vatican colors.

Francis also got an unexpected birthday gift on Tuesday when he was named Person of the Year by The Advocate, a leading US magazine for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities.

The magazine cited the pope’s “Who am I to judge” comment about gays.

Francis was named Time's Person of the Year last week.
