“Until they can clear this device, we’re keeping everybody safe,” said metro airport spokesman Mike Conway to the Detroit Free Press.
“There’s going to be a delay. How long the delay’s going to be, I don’t know. We have an EOD (explosive ordinance device) team there and another one on the way In the mean time, we’re moving everyone out of the way.”
Conway added that everyone has left the check-in area of the terminal, and no cars are being allowed to pass by. Delta flights leaving from the Mcnamara terminal remained unaffected by the closure.
“When they closed one of the security checkpoints, they rerouted everyone to the second security checkpoint, and now they’ve closed the terminal,” said an air traveler who preferred to go nameless to CBSDetroit.
“They’re not letting anyone board any flights and the flights are departing without passengers,” she said. “All the gates are closed; all the TSA is closed, and they’re stating it’s because they found a restricted item.
Also on April 1st, a suspect package closed a terminal at the Manchester Airport in the UK, reported the BBC, although the item in question appears to have not actually been a serious threat.
