Mohammad Roozi, Afghan soldier who reportedly wounded fellow soldiers in a 2011 attack, is tracked down and killed

Mohammed Roozi, an ex-Afghan national army soldier believed responsible for wounding several Australian and Afghan soldiers in a 2011 attack, was shot and killed by their combined forces in Takhar province late Tuesday, according to Australia's Canberra Times.

Roozi allegedly attacked fellow soldiers using automatic weapons and a grenade launcher at the Nasir base in Afghanistan's Oruzgan province in 2011, seriously three Australians and two Afghan soldiers, said the Guardian. He was participating in a military mentoring program at the time.

The Australian military put a great deal of effort into finding Roozi, who went on the run after the incident. He later reportedly appeared in a video in which he claimed to have joined the Taliban and killed 12 soldiers, according to the Guardian. 

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who announced the news early Thursday, described the operation as a joint effort that "involved months of focused intelligence and professional work by the Australian Defence Force in concert with the International Security Assistance Force [ISAF]," reported the Canberra Times. 

Australian Defense Force Chief General David Hurley said Roozi was killed after he threw a grenade at oncoming troops, slightly injuring an Afghan soldier, according to the Guardian.
