Horror in Zhongxing: At least 30 buried by China landslide (VIDEO)

A landslide in Sichuan province buried somewhere between 30 and 40 people, according to Chinese state media.

Xinhua cited local officials, reporting that the landslide in Zhongxing was caused by the recent heavy rains. More than 100 rescuers were on the scene, according to Xinhua.

Torrential rains have caused floods in some areas of China this week. The flooding is estimated to have cost $40 million in economic losses, and affected 370,000 people and 81,000 acres of crops.

Tuesday saw a bridge in Sichuan's Jiangyou collapse, leaving 12 people missing.

The mountainous region of China is especially prone to landslides and earthquakes. An April landslide in Lhasa buried 83 mine workers, and a January landslide in the Yunnan province killed 46 people, many of them children.

"So far we only know 11 families were buried and more than 200 residents have been evacuated," a local official told Agence France-Presse, about the latest landslide.
