One man is in custody after a school shooting on Wednesday near Decatur, Ga., ended with no injuries, but plenty of tense moments for two women on opposite ends of a very stressful phone conversation.
Officers responded to the call after a gunman barricaded himself into the office at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy and demanded a staff member call WSB-TV in Atlanta.
The woman was the only staff member in the office, the TV station reported, when she called Channel 2 Action News and assignment editor Lacey LeCroy answered.
“It didn’t take long to know that this woman was serious,” LeCroy told TV cameras after the incident.
The gunman told the woman working at the school that he wanted the TV cameras there “as police died.”
News teams were actually en route because word had already broken there was someone with an AK-47 assault rifle spotted inside the school.
Police traded shots with the man, who eventually gave himself up to officers, but not before LeCroy and the staff member – whom she called Antoinette – didn’t speak for about five minutes.
“I was so worried for her,” LeCroy said. “She did such a great job. She was worried for the kids.”
Kyle Jones, who spoke for the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, told USA Today the suspect is a white male who wore black clothing. He was either 19 or in his early 20s, CNN said.
There was no word about his motive, or why he chose the kindergarten to Grade 5 school.
Students evacuated the school as police went from classroom to classroom looking for any further suspects or evidence.
They also searched a car parked out front as students bused to a nearby Walmart where they were reunited with parents, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
