Football fan falls to his death at San Francisco arena (VIDEO)

A 32-year-old NFL fan fell to his death from an elevated walkway at San Francisco's Candlestick Park sport arena on Sunday, adding a grim note to the season opener for the popular football team.

Hayward native Kevin Hayes was attending the game with his brother when he fell off a pedestrian walkway to the sidewalk below, reports the San Francisco Examiner. The incident occurred at about 1:30 PM.

Witnesses of the incident note that Hayes appeared to be intoxicated at the time of the accident. An ambulance arrived and gave Hayes first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The results of a toxicology test are expected to be released soon, notes the San Francisco Chronicle. It remains unclear how far Hayes fell.

“We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time,” said 49ers spokesman Bob Lange, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Candlestick Park, a Bay Area institution since 1960, is to be closed after this season and replaced with a shopping center. The new Levis Stadium will host the 49ers in the city of Santa Clara, 38 miles from San Francisco.
