Egypt rejects Mubarak release request

An Egyptian court on Sunday denied a release requested by jailed former leader Hosni Mubarak, according to the Associated Press.
State news agency MENA said Cairo's Criminal Court ordered Mubarak to stay under lock and key for the next several week as investigators examine corruption charges against him, said AP.

Overthrown in 2011, Mubarak is thought to be responsible for the deaths of hundreds of anti-government protesters when his regime unsuccessfully attempted to crush the uprising.
He was tried and convicted on those and other charges last summer and handed a life sentence, reported Egypt's Ahram Online, but the court subsequently ordered a retrial on procedural grounds.
The re-trial, originally slated for this month, has been moved to May 11, according to Agence-France Press.
The court's Sunday ruling upheld a 15-day detention for Mubarak on one of the multiple charges against him, meaning there was virtually no chance of his release, according to Ahram Online.
