Police are searching for two vehicles connected to an overnight shooting in Washington, DC, about a block from the Capitol building.

Twelve people were hurt when gunmen from two vehicles opened fire about 2 am, the Washington Times reported.

Surveillance video captured two cars and crowds of people crumpling or running for cover. There are reports someone fired back at the cars, a silver sedan and darker BMW.

The violence occurred out front of a housing complex that’s well known to police as patrons left the Fur Nightclub nearby, The Washington Post said.

The club is near the intersection of New York Avenue and North Capitol Street just a short distance from the Capitol Building.

All of the victims, the youngest being 17, are expected to survive with wounds to their arms or legs. The most serious injury is a gunshot wound to the back.

“We have mostly gunshot wounds to the legs, extremities, hands, some graze wounds,” Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier told NBC News. “[The victims] have been transported to a hospital for some sort of treatment.”

The area is undergoing a transformation with construction on new homes and businesses, but is no stranger to violence, The Post reported.
