Clashes at Jordan university turn deadly

GlobalPost

Deadly clashes broke out Monday at the Al Hussein Bin Talal University in Maan, Jordan, according to The Jordan Times.

The Jordan Times said four people were killed, while PETRA news agency listed only one person dead. Both reports said over a dozen people were hurt when violence broke out at the university's campus in Maan, a city south of Amman.

Jordan's Public Security Department said students brought out guns during a fight, leading to an exchange of fire. The agency also told the Jordan Times by email that several injured students were in critical condition.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fight. Witnesses claimed police authorities forced their way into the university, but police denied this, reported The Jordan Times

The university has been temporary closed, according to PETRA

The incident comes days before US Barack Obama meets with Jordan's King Abdullah II at the White House.
