The young actress resided in the Juhu area of Mumbai with her mother and sister, reported the Times of India, which speculated that a failed love affair drove the young woman to suicide.

Khan's death has been registered as accidental for now, writes The Hindu, and a postmortem of her body is slated to be carried out Tuesday.

Jiah Khan was born in New York as Nafisa Khan and grew up in London, according to Reuters, making her acting debut in "Nishabd," leading to a number of other prominent Bollywood roles. Her last film was the 2010 "Housefull."

"Never ever seen a debutant actress with more spunk and more spirit than Jiah when i was directing her in Nishabd," commented director Ram Gopal Varma on Twitter, who directed Khan in her debut film.

"I don't know the reason what led to this but Jiah was very depressed about her career and scared for her future," added Varma in another Twitter post.
