4 dead, 2 injured in shooting spree in upstate New York

A gunman is on the run after he gunned down four people and wounded two others in a shooting spree in upstate New York Wednesday morning.

According to a CBS and AP report, two people were fatally shot in the Mohawk Valley area, at Gaffey's car wash in the town of Herkimer and two more were shot dead at a business on Washington Street in Herkimer.

Police said they were looking for 64-year-old Kurt Myers of Mohawk.

According to the Associated Press, mutiple gunshots rang out shortly before 2 p.m. ET in Herkimer, where state police were looking for Myers.

State police told media outlets that the second business was a barber shop.

Two other people were wounded in the shooting spree and taken to hospital. 

Local schools in Herkimer, Mohawk, Frankfort, and Richfield Springs are on lockdown as police continue their search for the gunman. 

The shooting happened about 65 miles east of Syracuse before 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to reports.

The Utica Observer-Dispatch reported that it is believed the gunman first opened fire at a home in the Village of Mohawk and the dwelling was then set on fire.

Firefighters responded to the fire while the shooter drove to the two businesses in Herkimer to continue the shooting spree, police said, Fox News reported.

Police were also seen removing about six long guns from the home, but it is unclear if the guns belonged to the suspect.

According to local television station WKTV, initial reports stated the suspect fled the shooting scenes in a red jeep with a black top.

The vehicle was found shortly after 10 a.m. in Hermkimer but the gunman was nowhere to be found.

Shortly before 11 a.m., eyewitnesses said there was a large police presence at an apartment on North Main Street in Herkimer, with guns drawn.
