17 puppies dumped in Indiana

In a bizarre but likely adorable discovery, a woman in Indiana found 17 puppies on the side of the road. It appears that someone had dumped them near the Indiana Dunes. Police are now looking for the person responsible, the Associated Press reported, but luckily the pups are in good health.

Karen Read had been driving at night when she saw the puppies. She says it was the reflection of light off the animals' eyes that caught her attention.

"I'm glad I came when I did," she told the Times in Munster. "We have coyotes, raccoons and possums out there. They'd be killed."

Officials say that the puppies, all Labrador mixes, seem to be from two different litters, WTHR reported

An organization called Lakeshore PAWS is now sheltering the dogs. "They're hilarious," the PAWS dog coordinator told Reuters

It's long been known that animal shelters are massively overcrowded. The Animal Medical Center of Southern California says that while early age spay and neuter is important, that the procedures have failed to alleviate the overwhelming shelter population across the country.
