Capitalism, the Economy and the Election

The Tavis Smiley Show

Tavis talks to Dr. Benjamin Barber about how the economy can be expected to drive voters as we head toward November, as well as how the outcome of the election might shape our country’s economy fortunes down the line.

Dr. Barber is a Distinguished Fellow at Demos, a public policy research group, and a prolific author. His most recent book is "Consumed: How Markets Corrupt Children, Infantilize Adults, and Swallow Citizens Whole."

He says when the market doesn’t work well, the costs of its malfunction are not spread equally across the population: "It’s always the poor, people of color, people without jobs — who pay the price." According to Barber, Americans are going to demand, in the way they vote, that the government step in to resolve the economic crisis.

"The Tavis Smiley Show" is a weekly show offering a unique blend of news and newsmakers in expanded conversations, along with feature reports and regular commentators. "The Tavis Show is produced by Tavis Smiley productions, and distributed nationwide by PRI.
