Blasts in Boston Bring Back Memories of Combat Duty

The World

When President Obama came to Boston on Thursday to give words of comfort to the city, he also paid tribute to those people who rushed in to help the injured near the Marathon finish line.

Benny was one of those first responders on the scene. He's a Boston firefighter and he's asked that we not use his last name.

Like so many of the first responders at the Marathon, Benny is also a veteran.

He served as a Marine in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

He just never thought he'd be putting his combat experience to use at home.

Do you support journalism that strengthens our democracy?

At The World, we believe strongly that human-centered journalism is at the heart of an informed public and a strong democracy. We see democracy and journalism as two sides of the same coin. If you care about one, it is imperative to care about the other.

Every day, our nonprofit newsroom seeks to inform and empower listeners and hold the powerful accountable. Neither would be possible without the support of listeners like you. If you believe in our work, will you give today? We need your help now more than ever!
