The excitement over Black Friday and Cyber Monday seems to fly in face of the economic realities of many Americans. The Takeaway asked listeners to give their thoughts about the shrinking middle class, and where they are financially this holiday season. A listener from Detroit says,

“I grew up in an upper-middle class family that was hit hard when the economy fell. If not for crippling student debt and a constant stream of medical bills, I would be a young middle class American ‘living the dream.’ As it is, I am barely hanging on. Fresh from college, I was lucky enough to snag a well-paying job right out the gate. But I wonder how much longer we can hold onto our middle-class status by the skin of our teeth?”
