Summer music: Sharon Van Etten’s mixtape

The Takeaway
The World

We’re celebrating summer music here on The Takeaway. Throughout the month, we’ll be talking with different musicians about what songs say summer to them. Our guest today is New Jersey-raised and Brooklyn-based singer and songwriter Sharon Van Etten. Sharon recently toured Europe with The National, played a series of shows for the South By Southwest music conference, and finished up a 25-stop North American tour. Her latest album is called “Epic.”  Sharon’s summer mixtape includes:
From her youth:
Leslie Gore — “It’s My Party”
Weezer — “In the Garage”
Beastie Boys — “Hey Ladies”

Songs she’s listening to this summer:
Austra — “Lose It”
Wye Oak — “The Alter”
And here’s the video for Beastie Boys’ “Hey Ladies”:

Do you support journalism that strengthens our democracy?

At The World, we believe strongly that human-centered journalism is at the heart of an informed public and a strong democracy. We see democracy and journalism as two sides of the same coin. If you care about one, it is imperative to care about the other.

Every day, our nonprofit newsroom seeks to inform and empower listeners and hold the powerful accountable. Neither would be possible without the support of listeners like you. If you believe in our work, will you give today? We need your help now more than ever!
