Sargent Shriver, Peace Corps leader, dies at 95
Robert Sargent Shriver Junior, brother-in-law to president John F. Kennedy, died yesterday in Bethesda, Md. He was 95. He was married to Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who died in 2009, and was the father of Maria Shriver. Shriver was the founding director of the Peace Corps, and served as U.S. ambassador to France from 1968 to 1970. Sargent also ran for vice president in 1972, with Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2003.
