Gitmo detainees face death penalty

This Brigadier General said the charges allege a long term, highly sophisticated plan by Al Qaeda to attack the US. Prosecutors have been working for a long time on this case, ending with a recommendation for death penalty. They also want to see the six men tried together by a military tribunal. The general says the trial would be as open as possible. Critics though are skeptical the men will get a fair trial and the way the tribunals are set up go against the defendants. This analyst says the military tribunals at Gitmo are a far cry from historically how they’ve been set up. He says the charges brought today aren’t even mentioned in international law. Others though maintain that’s not an issue. KSM has already confessed to planning the 9/11 attacks but that confession may prove problematic in court. The CIA recently admitted it used water-boarding during his interrogation. The General said it will be up to the military judge to decide what evidence is allowable. It’s hard to predict when this case will go to court. It could be years before we know how it all ends.
