Don’t ask, don’t tell

The US military does not recruit openly gay members, part of the �Don’t ask don’t tell� policy. Under that policy gays and lesbians are allowed to serve as long as they don’t talk about their sexuality. That policy has been in place since 1993 and was fathered by Moskos. Moskos was a great believer in US military service and was the son of Greek immigrants. He was drafted and served two years after college. This analyst says Moskos believed military service was one of the most important ways a citizen could prove their American-ness, and also a way that new immigrants could prove themselves and rise in society. Moskos cared about military service as a form of social integration. He stood behind his policy but admitted it wasn’t perfect.
