Dalai Lama visits U.S.

After the unrest in Tibet began last month, the Chinese consulate official in San Francisco asked the U of Wash President to cancel the Dalai Lama’s visit, a request which the president denied. Another group upset by the visit is the Chinese Students and Scholars Association at UW. The group posted an open letter of complaint to the president and after meeting with the group, the university said it will make sure there is no political agenda involved in the Dalai Lama’s visit to UW and that no politically sensitive questions will be asked. The President of UW has made sure that the Dalai Lama’s speech would not be constrained during the visit, although the university did pre-screen students’ questions for the Dalai Lama because the Q&A is supposed to be about Buddhism and not Tibet. This editor says lots of Chinese immigrants are upset about the Dalai Lama’s visit as well.
