China Goes Nuts for Pecans, but Americans Pay a Price

If you love to eat nuts, you may have noticed that the cost of the great American pecan has gone through the roof over the past few years. You can thank the Chinese consumer for that. It turns out the rise in pecans at the grocery store is due to a slow and steady increase in demand from China. Hilton Segler, Executive Director of the National Pecan Growers Council, says the new demand may have to do with the health consciousness of the Chinese people. According to him the pecan has a similar level of antioxidants to that of the mighty blueberry.   And Chinese consumers seemed to be much more interested in health awareness, compared to the average, fast food-eating American.
