Mexico violence: La Resistencia leader Ramiro Pozos Gonzalez arrested

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – The suspected leader and founder of a criminal group known as La Resistencia has been arrested in Mexico, CNN Mexico reported today.

Ramiro Pozos Gonzalez, 42, who has been accused of murder, kidnapping, extortion and drug trafficking, was detained on Tuesday in Metepec in the State of Mexico, Spanish news agency EFE reported.

La Resistencia is believed to be responsible for much of the gang violence in the western state of Jalisco in the past two years, the BBC reported.

A defiant Pozos Gonzalez was paraded in front of the Mexican media earlier today, along with a gold-plated rifle said to belong to him.

Pozos Gonzalez, handcuffed and flanked by two masked federal police officers, smiled and gave the thumps up to the cameras.

Authorities had offered one million pesos ($76,700) for information leading to his arrest.

Mexican security forces have captured a number of gang leaders in recent weeks.

Last week, Mexican marines arrested Mario Cardenas Guillen, the suspected leader of the Gulf Cartel.

About a week earlier, federal police detained Nemesio Oseguera, the suspected leader of the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel, in a deadly shootout. In retaliation, the gang set fire to dozens of vehicles which they used to block highways throughout Jalisco state.
