Authoritarians justify targeting dissidents abroad as ‘counterterrorism’

There’s a growing phenomenon of countries repressing dissidents beyond their own borders, including a NATO ally of the US: Turkey. As the Washington Post reports, the tactics and language justifying these actions are pulled from the post-9/11 counterterrorism playbook. Host Marco Werman spoke to Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, the United Nations’ special rapporteur on human rights and counterterrorism from 2017 to 2023. Today, she joins the show from Geneva, Switzerland.
