On Tuesday, Brazil experienced its highest daily death toll from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic: 1,641 people. Hospital systems across the country are overwhelmed and scientists say a new variant has been found in Brazil that appears to be more contagious. Still, the country’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, continues to downplay the threat and peddle conspiracy theories.
