Taliban bans opium poppy cultivation

The Taliban’s supreme leader has issued a decree banning cultivation of poppy, which provides the raw material for heroin and other opiates. Opium production made up about 7% of Afghanistan’s gross domestic product last year and the ban is likely to upset farmers and those involved in the opium trade. The ban also comes at a time when Afghanistan is already facing an economic crisis. The World’s Shirin Jaafari reports.
