Negotiations underway on opening grain corridor from Ukraine

Amid spiking global prices of grain, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlüt Çavüşoğlu in Ankara today to negotiate a plan to allow safe passage of blocked Ukrainian wheat exports through the Black Sea. The two did not reach a formal deal, but pledged to meet again in Istanbul. But balancing competing interests will be difficult: Russia is demanding sanctions relief in return for security assurances, but Ukrainian officials say they do not believe Russia’s promises can be trusted.
