Caught in no man’s land, migrants face peril on Greece-Turkey border

Migrants trying to leave places like Syria are legally allowed to apply for asylum in Europe if they can make it to the continent. Increasingly though, they’re being expelled from Europe before they can even file a case. The practice is known as “pushback.” Human rights groups are broadly condemning it. This month, one pushback ended in tragedy when a 5-year-old girl died on an island between Turkey and Greece. As The World’s Durrie Bouscaren reports from Istanbul, that death fits a pattern of abuses against asylum-seekers.
